F.A.Q.

1. What is biodiesel?
2. Why is biodiesel better for the environment?
3. Do I have to convert my regular diesel engine to use biodiesel?

1. What is biodiesel?

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel that is derived from renewable resources, usually from vegetable sources.  It contains no petroleum, is biodegradable and nontoxic, and can be used in any diesel (compression ignition) engine with little or no modification.  According to the National Biodiesel Board, biodiesel is the only alternative fuel that has cleared all the health effects testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act.

2. Why is biodiesel better for the environment?

A study in 1998 co-sponsored by the US Department of Energy and the US Department of Agriculture acknowledged that biodiesel reduces net CO2 emissions by 78% compared to petroleum diesel.   Instead of petroleum, which is non-renewable and requires destruction of other natural resources, biodiesel can be made from renewable resources, even WASTE products.

Visit www.biodiesel.org for more scientific studies showing that biodiesel is significantly better for the environment.

3. Do I have to convert my regular diesel engine to use biodiesel?

No.  You may fill your diesel engine with biodiesel and drive.  Be aware, however, of the various blends of biodiesel.  A pure blend of 100% biodiesel is called B100.  Biodiesel has solvency properties that may release accumulated deposits on tank walls and pipes left from regular diesel storage, causing filters to clog in the beginning.  Take the proper precautions.
